Catcchii is Catchy: The Psychology Behind the Addiction
When it comes to my hair, Catcchii started as a way to care for my curls. I didn’t expect it to become a way of caring for me.
What happens between washing your hair and putting on your Catcchii is more than a hair-care routine. It is a pause. A moment of quiet. A little bit of peace in an otherwise busy day.
My hair was always smooth and kept short. Then one day I decided I had had enough and was going to grow it. To my surprise, I discovered that underneath all those years of short hair was a head full of curls!
Discovering your curls is one thing. Learning how to live with them is another!
Smooth and curly hair needs a completely different approach. Natural oils from the scalp don’t travel down curly hair as easily, so conditioning becomes particularly important. Too little and the hair is dry and frizzy; too much and the curls become limp.
And then there is humidity which can make it look as though your head has exploded.
Fortunately, my stylist @Â Running with Scissors taught me that curls need to be cut differently and cared for with products specifically designed for them.
Then came Catcchii.
What is a Catcchii?
The best way to describe Catcchii is a hair towel, but must simpler and lighter on your head. Gone are the days of walking around with a heavy towel on my head after washing my hair.
That all changed.
Initially, my routine was wash, condition, apply curl products, put on my Catcchii, leave it for a while and then diffuse.
But I discovered I didn’t even need the diffuser anymore. I could simply put on my Catcchii and let my hair dry naturally in the sun or while getting on with things around the house.
And that’s when I started to realise that Catcchii was becoming more than something I used for my hair.
The ritual
Think about that feeling after you’ve gone several days without a proper shower perhaps after camping or traveling.
You know that moment when a warm shower suddenly becomes the thing you are looking forward to most? After a long international business trip, I know that feeling well.
Days of rushing between meetings, airports and last-minute arrangements eventually lead to one glorious thought: A warm shower.
The water running over your head. The quiet. The feeling of being able to stop.
For me, washing my hair has become part of that ritual. The shampoo, the conditioner, the scalp massage, and then, finally, putting on my Catcchii.
That is my favourite part.
The moment the Catcchii goes on, something in me seems to switch off.
My curls are being cared for and protected, but somehow I feel as though I am being cared for and protected too.
It has become my little cocoon of peace and quiet.
My space.
Sometimes I put music on.
For a while, there is nothing else.
No rushing.
No thinking about what needed to happen next.
Just clean hair, music, curls and my Catcchii.
So, is it an addiction?
Perhaps.
But I’ve started thinking that what we become attached to isn’t always the thing itself. Sometimes it’s the feeling it creates.
We spend so much of our lives being busy, productive, available and thinking about the next thing.
Maybe we need rituals that give us permission to stop.
For me, that ritual happens to involve putting something on my head.
And if my Catcchii addiction brings me back to a place of calm and sanity, I’m not sure I want to give it up.
Catcchii is Catchy.
It protects and enhances my curls.
But somewhere along the way, I’ve discovered that it also gives me permission to protect a little bit of myself.
